Drivers heading to South Lake Tahoe this fall will have to take a long detour because a section of Highway 50 will be closed for two weeks during months of construction, Caltrans said. Building a new bridge over the Truckee River at the intersection of Interstate 80 requires detours to and from South Bay and Lake and then back to the Bay Area. Drivers traveling southbound from the San Francisco Bay Bridge also face longer detours, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Highway 50 between Tahoe and Placerville will be closed for two weeks during construction to get from Carson City to the south coast, according to Caltrans. Fifty will close traffic at the intersection of Interstate 80 and Bryan Road at 7: 30 a.m. on Friday, September 1 and continue south on I-80 until you turn right onto Bryan Rd. 17E13, then turn left onto South Bay Road.
Highway 50 runs west from Tahoe South and leads down to a well-developed parking lot on South Bay Road. The rest of the highway climbs up into the canyon and then down again to take you south to Placerville and then north to Carson City and the south coast.
The closure is scheduled for 6 a.m. on two eastbound lanes, with traffic diverted eastbound toward South Lake Tahoe to Sacramento. Fifty will be closed from 15 July 2020 to 1 August 2021 and then until the end of the project in 2019. Fifty that are now closed will be reopened to traffic on the north side of Lake Tahoe, but not on the south side, as it has been closed since July 2015.

Traffic is being diverted to Caltrans' Tahoe South, where you leave Highway 50 in a well-developed parking lot. The slightly off-the-beaten-path path is more than a half-mile south of Lake El Dorado, north of South Lake Tahoe.
