Located on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, one of the largest and most scenic lakes in the United States, South Lake Tahoe, California and unincorporated, "census-designated place" Stateline, Nevada appear as one contiguous area, home to about 25,000 people. Lying at over 6,000 feet above sea level and sandwiched between towering mountains and the scenic lake, the area is popular with tourists year round.
The focus of South Lake Tahoe tourism changes with the seasons. In winter, skiers flock to Sierra at Tahoe and Kirkwood, located in the mountains that rise directly above town. Heavenly ski resort is so close that skiers can stay in town, walk down the street and take a gondola ride directly to the slopes.
Summer is the time for outdoor activities, with a wide range of water play including kayaking, boating, jet-skiing and swimming. To see the lake without getting wet, visitors can take a scenic ride aboard a paddlewheel boat. North of town in Tahoe City, rafting the gentle Truckee River is a good way to stay cool. Other fun diversions include touring Scandinavian-style house Vikingsholm on the shores of Emerald Bay. The Heavenly ski resort gondola runs year round and offers spectacular summer views.
Any time of year, gambling is a popular pastime on the Nevada side of the border, with Harrah's, Harvey's, Lakeside, Bill's and Horizon casinos offering plenty of ways to win -- or lose.
Harrah's and Harvey's casinos also offer some of the area's most popular places to stay. The Holiday Inn Express gives excellent value for money. Bed and breakfast inns Castle at Summer Place and Black Bear Inn provide a comfortable respite from all the recreation.
Popular places to dine include Echo Restaurant, Evan's, Fresh Ketch (seafood) and Freshies. The M. S. Dixie II offers dinner and brunch cruises on the lake.
